Bauer, Baker, and Baldwin City: Electrifying a Small Town’s Identity

Produced by Baker University and Hometown Collaborations, this documentary short examines the electrifying history of Baldwin City. Early July in 1907 Baker University professor William Bauer electrified Baldwin City in northeast Kansas. Around the turn of the 20th century, Baker University was invested in improving their university and the town of Baldwin City. So, despite the townspeople’s original fears that electricity was merely a fad that would negatively influence the community, Dr. Bauer convinced the city council and the townspeople of electricity’s advantages.

Baldwin City’s electrical plant still maintains a significant role in the community and within the region. Learn more about this electrifying local history.
