The Future of Kansas History Summit

A Special Opportunity for Kansas Museums and Historical Societies

You’re invited to the inaugural Kansas History Summit to explore “the future of Kansas history.” This two-day event co-hosted by Humanities Kansas and the Kansas Historical Society is inspired by America’s 250th and in recognition of the important work of local museums and historical societies in preserving our state and nation’s history. 

Your voice is needed as a Kansas history stakeholder! The Summit will explore the past, present, and future of Kansas history and discussions among local experts across the state will inspire new ideas. Participants will enjoy guided tours of the new Kansas Museum of History, a special event with Kansas author and historian Candice Millard, and opportunities to connect with museum professionals. You won't want to miss it.

The Summit is free but registration is required. Travel stipends and hotel reimbursements are available. Restrictions apply.  

Who should attend?
Local history stakeholders and decision makers, including museum directors and historical society board members. Limit of two per organization. 

What can I expect at the summit?

  • The Summit begins at 4:00 on Thursday, September 24 and concludes at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 25.
  • Your participation is important. The History Summit is an opportunity for you to share your expertise and lend your voice. You’ll join museum colleagues and historians from across the state as we chart a course for Kansas history in the future.  
  • Small group discussions guide the day. 
  • Opportunities to network with museum colleagues and historians from across the state will provide important connections. 
  • A special presentation on September 24 from bestselling Kansas author Candice Millard
  • Early Bird opportunity to tour the Charles Curtis House in downtown Topeka.  
  • Guided tours of the new Kansas Museum of History
  • Opportunities to meet with KHS experts! Get answers to your questions about collections, the historic register, Native American artifacts, African American research, and more.

All meals and refreshments are provided. Reimbursements for hotel and travel stipends are available for small and rural museums. Restrictions apply.

Does your museum or historical society have a story about local history research or a unique project that you would like to share? Apply to give a 5-10 minute presentation at the History Summit.

Accessibility

All History Summit activities are held at the Kansas Historical Society which is fully wheelchair accessible. The optional tour of the newly acquired Charles Curtis House is not wheelchair accessible.
