Presented by Carrie Herman, Director, Kansas Learning Center for Health

Hear the fascinating story of Dr Arthur Hertzler, who practiced medicine in Halstead for more than 50 years. Born in Iowa in 1870, Hertzler came to Kansas and established the Halstead Hospital. He was renowned for his innovation in pathology and concern for the lack of health education. In 1938, Hertzler gained notoriety with his book, "The Horse and Buggy Doctor," an autobiographical account of practicing medicine on the Kansas plains. The Kansas Learning Center for Health in Halstead was founded in his honor.

Event is part of "Microbes in Manhattan: Fighting Flue and Polio in Manhattan," an exhibit that examines health care in the first half of the 20th century and Kansas's response to disease outbreaks.
