Presented by James Sherow

From the 1880s to the earliest days of the 20th century, the "Irrigation Crusade" was promoted as a way for grassland farmers and community boosters to continue thriving during droughts. Charles "Buffalo" Jones—colorful Kansas frontiersman—led the crusade in western Kansas by organizing four irrigation companies to divert water 100 miles from the Arkansas River to land in and around Garden City. This presentation gives context to Jones in the larger Irrigation Crusade of the West.
