Speakers Bureau Common Questions

Click on a question to find the answer faster. Have a question not listed? Contact info@humanitieskansas.org or (785) 357-0359. We’ll walk you through the process.

How to Bring a Humanities Kansas Speaker to Your Event

1. Review the Speakers Bureau catalog and select a speaker and topic. There is a booking fee of $100 per presentation.

2. Contact the speaker, extend the invitation, and confirm time, date, format, length of presentation, and location. The format indicates whether the event is to be held in person or online.

3. Apply online at humanitieskansas.org for HK program funding to bring the speaker to your community! You’ll pay the booking fee during the application process. Payment can be made online by credit or debit card, or by check through the mail.

You’ll receive an email from HK when your application has been awarded.  Once that happens, you’ll be ready to publicize your exciting event!

4. Publicize your event. This is exciting! Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau events must be free and open to the public. Download a template for your press release, photos, and more. Download a Humanities Kansas logo poster to display at the event.

5. Tell us how it went! After the event, fill out a Speakers Bureau evaluation and cost share form online (required). Send us photos! Your $100 booking fee will count toward cost share.

Who is Eligible to Receive Funding?

Humanities Kansas will cover the cost of the speaker to present in your community. The following criteria must be met:

  • Humanities Kansas programs are intended for out-of-school adults. Humanities Kansas is unable to support classroom visits or events designed for children or teens only.
  • Presentations must remain free and open to the public.
  • In-state nonprofits are eligible, including colleges and universities. Off campus venues are strongly preferred.
  • 501(c)(3) status is not required.
  • Still unsure if you're eligible to receive funding? Click here.

Award Amounts

  • HK pays speakers directly after the event.

Closing Reports: Evaluation and Cost Share

  • Organizations who receive funding support from Humanities Kansas are required to submit an evaluation within two weeks after the event takes place. Please log in to your applicant dashboard to access your closing report and cost share form.

  • All Humanities Kansas funds are matched with local contributions called cost share. This includes volunteer or staff hours needed to organize the event, the rental of a meeting room, and other items. It does not have to include a cash match. Click here to see a sample cost share form.

Deadlines

  • Applications are due no later than six weeks before the event date.
  • The events should occur within six months of the date of the submission to Humanties Kansas.

The Sponsoring Organization Will Be Responsible For:

  • The $100 program free payable to Humanities Kansas.
  • Coordinating and publicizing the event.
  • Submitting an evaluation to HK within two weeks after the event is held. (Filing your final report ensures that your organization can continue to receive Humanities Kansas support grants, as funding allows).

How Many Humanities Kansas Programs Can You Receive?

  • In-state, nonprofit organizations are eligible for up to 4 funding requests per Humanities Kansas fiscal year (November 1 through October 31) as funding allows.
  • Speakers Bureau is intended for an out-of-school adult audience and must be free and open to the public. Please contact info@humanitieskansas.org or 785-357-0359 if you have questions. It is possible that not every request for funding will be awarded.
