(view on google maps)

Join the Hays Public Library from the comfort of your own home for this online presentation.

In 2018, Hannes Zacharias set out on a journey at the headwaters of the Arkansas River near the Continental Divide in Colorado with the intention to travel primarily by kayak the entire length of the river down to the Gulf of Mexico. This was a goal of his since 1976, when he completed a similar trip carrying a bicentennial message from the Mayor of Dodge City to the Mayor of New Orleans.

In this two-part presentation, Zacharias combines his personal experiences along with natural and cultural history to provide a unique understanding about the past and the future of the Arkansas River and what it means for the people, communities, industry, and wildlife that rely upon it.

This conversation was prerecorded and will premiere on the Kansas Room at the Hays Public Library YouTube channel at 6 PM. Visit the "Register" link below to access the channel.

Explore Hays' own unique water story by checking out the local Crossroads exhibit, "From Crisis to Conservation to Conversation" currently on display at the library. Visit crossroads.humanitieskansas.org for a virtual Crossroads experience.
