Women's Work for Women: The Kansas State Industrial Farm for Women
Presentation by: Nicole Perry
In the years between the two world wars, over 5,000 women were detained at the Kansas State Industrial Farm for Women in Lansing for having a venereal disease. Under state legislation Chapter 205, these women were sent to the Farm without a trial and with no other criminal offense (interestingly, men were rarely subjected to the same punishment). This talk will explore the lives of all women involved—the women activists who lobbied to create the Farm, the professionals who worked there, and the inmates whose freedoms were compromised.
