Outdoor screening and panel discussion of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The film tells the story of humanity's evolution and the rise of artificial intelligence in the form of the supercomputer HAL9000. Though released fifty years ago, its themes - reality vs virtual reality - resonate in the age of unprecedented social interaction coupled with human isolation in the age of social media.
The film will be preceded by a panel discussion, "From Star Trek to Your Cell Phone," examining how sci-fi thinking impacts pop culture.
This event is part of a "Jump!Star," a series of public programs that celebrate the night sky of the Flint Hills.
